Racing Reno Tahoe: Oddball Races

Racing Reno Tahoe: Oddball Races

We have foot races and motorsport races but now it is time for some of Reno’s wackiest races of all. These races are called oddball for a reason; they always bring a little something extra to the racing game. Did you think that riding an ostrich to the finish line was a thing? Well you are in for a treat. From balloons to cheetahs to longboards, we have it all.

International Camel & Ostrich Races

September 9-11, 2016

12 pm (noon) – 2:30 pm

Downtown, Virginia City

This year, Virginia City is hosting its 57th annual Camel and Ostrich Race. This annual affair goes all the way back to the 1950s when the Virginia City newspaper published a farce about racing camels. Every year since then thousands of people have come out to watch these talented men and women take control over camels, ostriches and zebras trying to reach the finish line. While you will be laughing hysterically, you will also be a part of one of the many traditions that takes place in the eccentric town of Virginia City.

The races are on in #virginiacity! Camels, ostriches, zebras and more! #vccamelraces

The Great Balloon Race

September 9-11, 2016

5:00 am – 10:00 am

Rancho San Rafael Park

This year will be the 35th year for The Great Balloon Race. This breathtaking event has been awarded the “Best Special Event in Reno” and “Best Special Event in Northern Nevada.” Throw on your PJ’s, bring a thermos of hot chocolate and come watch the glow show that begins right at 5 am. The glow show displays 12-15 hot air balloons being lit up into the dawn sky. Following that, at 7 am the mass ascension will begin and you get to watch up to 100 balloons swooping up into the sky. One of the most beautiful sights to see is a bunch of beautifully colored balloons over the Reno skyline.

World Championship Outhouse Race

October 1-2, 2016

12 pm (noon) – 4:00 pm

Downtown, Virginia City

Virginia City is at it again with a hilariously random race. This year they are hosting their 27th annual World Championship Outhouse Race. Back when outdoor plumbing was outlawed in the mining town on Virginia City, the angry residents of the town took their outhouses to the streets. One person rides in the outhouse while the rest of the team pushes, pulls, or drags the themed outhouse to the finish line. Previous wacky outhouses have been named “The Flapper Crapper,” “The Haunted Outhouse,” “Alice In Pottyland” and “The Potty Poopers.” Be sure to see what these competitors have in store this year.
