Guide to Rib Cook-Off 2016

It is finally time to welcome the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off to Sparks, Nevada. Everyone loves a three-day weekend, so why not spend this year’s Labor Day surrounded by meat, smoke and sauce? With two dozen of the world’s top barbecue competitors serving more than 240,000 pounds of ribs, you are going to need a guide telling you where to go, how to get there and when to arrive.

But first, let’s meet the Rib Cookers.

With the winning prize of $14,500 in cash, these Rib Cookers are ready to bring their A game. Competing this year we have Aussom Aussie (Pittsburgh, PA); Austin’s Texas Lightning BBQ (Burr Ridge, IL); Back Forty Texas Barbecue (Pleasant Hill, CA); BJ’s Barbecue (Sparks, NV); Bone Daddy’s BBQ (Midland, MI); Bourbon Q (Westport, KY); Butch’s Smack Your Lips BBQ (Mt. Laurel, NJ); Carson City BBQ (Carson City, NV); Checkered Pig BBQ (Martinsville, VA); Chicago BBQ Company (Burr Ridge, IL); Desperado’s BBQ & Rib Co. (Hinckley, OH); Famous Dave’s BBQ (Minnetonka, MN); Hole in the Wall BBQ (Eugene, OR); Joey’s Texas Originals (Borger, TX); Johnson’s Bar-B-Que (Chesapeake, VA); Just North of Memphis (Minneapolis, MN); Kinder’s Custom Meats Inc. (Concord, CA); Montana Q Bar-B-Que House (Frenchtown, MT); Porky-N-Beans BBQ (Port Saint Lucie, FL); Rasta Joe’s BBQ Inc. (Rochester, IN); Texas Outlaw Barbecue (Elizabethtown, KY); The Barbecue Company Inc. (Phoenix, AZ); Uncle Bub’s (Westmont, IL).

The winners will be announced on Monday, September 5 at 2 pm.

The Nugget World Rib-Eating Championship

On Wednesday, August 31 at 6 pm the The Nugget World Rib-Eating Championship will begin. Come down and watch competitors devour pounds of meat for a first place prize of $2,500. Last year, Matt “The Megatoad” Stonie  was able to take down 10.5 pounds of ribs in just 12 minutes! These rib-eating competitors are in the race for a total prize purse of $5,000 with 1st – 5th place winners. Be sure to find out who gets to take home the title this year.

Entertainment 

Every night of the Rib Cook-Off there is musical entertainment that takes place on the Main Stage. What’s better than chowing down on delicious ribs, chugging a beer and listening to good music? To kick of the entertainment for this six-day event there will be an Elton John Tribute performed by Rus Anderson on Wednesday, August 31 starting at 7 pm. The rest of the entertainment is as followed;

The Garage Boys – Thursday, September 1 – 7:00 pm

Vertical Horizon – Friday, September 2 – 7:00 pm

Jessie James Decker – Saturday, September 3 – 7:00 pm

Eddie Money – Sunday, September 4 – 7:00 pm

The Original Wailers – Monday, September 5 – 3:00 pm

Beer Garden 

Last but not least, there is the Beer Garden. The Nugget Casino Resort is partnering up with Budweiser and Morrey Distributing to bring Rib Cook-Off visitors all kinds of craft beers. These craft beers were selected to pair nicely with barbecued foods. So once you get your sampler of ribs be sure to stop by the Beer Garden located on Victorian Plaza, near the water fountain.

Transportation 

During the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off there is a free shuttle service.

Shuttle Stop #1:

Iron Horse Shopping Center – 505 E. Prater Way

Wednesday – Sunday 11:00 am – 10:00 pm
Monday 11:00 am – 7:00 pm

Shuttle Stop #2:

Reno Sparks Convention Center – Parking Lot on corner of Coliseum Way and Peckham Way

Wednesday – Sunday 11:00 am – 10:00 pm
