Guide to Reno Craft Beer Week 2016
The first thing to note about Reno Craft Beer Week is the deceiving nature of the name; it’s not actually a week’s worth of activities, it’s a full 10 days! Starting Friday, May 13 and running through Sunday, May 22, local breweries and businesses will be bringing the best of the best craft beers to the masses. With over 30 individual events taking place, it will be difficult to choose just one. Our suggestion is to pick one for each day; there’s plenty of time to recover before those Memorial Day weekend BBQs and beach parties. Here are some ideas on where to start:
Backwash Reno Celebrates Hops and Hopes
Don’t let the name scare you off. There’s a reason that this event is the kick-off and one of the stand-out activities for the week. Backwash celebrates local home brewers and beer enthusiasts by allowing them to enter their own creations (nearly 100 entries this year!) and compete for a chance to have their brew featured at Silver Peak Brewery. It also functions as a fundraiser for Project Great Outdoors. Come out to enjoy some locally brewed creations and help support a great cause! The event takes place Friday, May 13 at Greater Nevada Field.
Something Strange is Brewin’
While the name “Backwash” isn’t an indication of what attendees should expect, the Strange Brew Festival is exactly what it sounds like. How about a Chicken and Waffles Hefeweizen? Or maybe a Bourbon Bacon Maple Stout? Seriously, these flavors get crazy. Come in with an open mind and leave with some surprisingly happy taste buds. Event takes place Saturday, May 14 at The Brewer’s Cabinet. You can also opt to ride the Strange Brew Bike. Hop aboard this peddle-driven contraption for a brewery tour including two of the Brew Bike’s normal stops as well as entrance into the Strange Brew Festival for a limited time.
The Last Hurrah
Finish the week off right with a proper farewell to the beer-filled festivities with, you guessed it, more beer! The You Had Me at Beer Fest will give you a chance to sample some of our local craft beers while enjoying live music and food options from food trucks as well as the host of the event, Great Basin Brewery. The party will take place on Sunday, May 22 at the Great Basin Brewery in Sparks.
But Wait, There’s More…
You don’t have to be a beer connoisseur to enjoy the week’s events. In fact, this is a great time to discover what kind of “beer person” you are with nights dedicated to different styles of beer including saisons and sours. It’s also a great opportunity to expand your palette. Tap Takeovers will be abundant where patrons can try a variety of popular west coast breweries including Bear Republic, Track 7 and Ballast Point. Add some food to the mix by checking out one of the food pairing events. From cheese plates to gourmet cupcakes, we like to think that every beer has a complementing sidekick.
